I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Behind the Columns" by Arlette Gaffrey. This historical romance is refreshing and easy to read. I appreciate Arlette's great story telling ability that reveals to the reader a fascinating insight into Creole history. The story flows well and the characters are fresh and personable. As the reader enters the story, we are enticed to live out and share the experiences of these fascinating lives. The story reveals their passion for life and love even amongst the cruelty, pain and disappointment of hardship and uncertainty. We see their strengths, passions and failures. The insight into the historic lives of these vivid characters relates to the hopes and dreams of today and our own personal journey. This was a great follow-up to Arlette's first book "A World of His Own: In the Land of the Creoles." I expect she has another great story heading our way soon and I don't intend to miss it!Product details

If you want to read a novel that tells you how the wealthy lived in the deep South,particularly in New Orleans,in the middle of the 19th century;Arlette brings it all to life for you in this sterling novel of romance,wealth,history and filled with unforgettable characters and human emotions.
This period in history was exceptional in the development of America,and has been the background of some of the best novels ever written about how the country developed.Of course,"Gone With the Wind" is a classic about this period; but life was just as spectacular elsewhere,in America.Atlanta was brought to us very clearly;but here you will see what was going on in New Orleans and New York at the same time.Here we meet the Creoles,a mixture of French and English of New Orleans and life on their plantations and the Dutch from the Hudson Valley of New York and their patroons.
Arlette brings this piece of history to life with a basic romance ,but even more than a love story,she shows what life was like for those people who lived is this world of high society,wealth and all the personal emotions,family connections and even prejudices that went with it all.
Arlette is an excellent storyteller,and even though her novel runs to nearly 340 pages;there is not a single paragraph that the reader won't find mesmerizing,and once getting started,will find very hard to put down.
"Gone With the Wind" is arguably the great American novel,and the movie is one, if not the best, ever made.Many people ask "why don't they write novels and make movies like that anymore?". The answer to that question was summed up in this short ,but astute remark by Walter Bagehot "The reason why so few good books are written is that so few people who can write know anything".The writers like Margaret Mitchell,John Steinbeck,Mark Twain Frank McCourt, and such knew intimately what they wrote about, and that is the reason they were so successful.
Throughout this novel,the thing that becomes very evident is that Arlette's writing and storytelling is based on her extensive knowledge about life in New Orleans at this time.
I realize it is a bit away from this book,but I just completed another historical novel that anyone who appreciates the books I've mentioned should consider reading.That book,"Galway Bay" by Mary Pat Kelly,(see my review) is another excellent novel,about the same time period in Ireland and America.Rather than being centered on the Irish in Boston and New York it involves New Orleans and Chicago.
So,there are still writers around ,who know enough to write great novels;and we are fortunate to have two such wonderful novels on the bookshelves at the same time.
"Behind the Columns" is a great read,grips the readers interest and keeps one wondering how things are going to be played out,from beginning to end.When you finally come to the end of the book,you are going to say to yourself,"Wow!, what a story;I wish I knew what happened in their lives after that?"...maybe Arlette is already working on what Paul Harvey would say, "Now here's the rest of the story".We can only hope so.

This is an elegantly written romance novel set within New Orleans in the mid 1800s. It is during the time when magnificent paddle wheel boats glided down the Mississippi River carrying wealthy passengers and cargo to their ultimate destinations. Desireé Bordeaux, a Créole beauty and her best friend Nicole Thibodeaux, watched from their carriage near the wharf with anticipation to view the brand new luxurious steamboat just about to dock. David Walker a wealthy young man and Harvard graduate was also waiting there to meet his college friend Lance Van Buren who was making his first visit to New Orleans. Lance perused the harbor with his telescope eying the many visitors standing there. With a strong gaze his eyes settled on the two young ladies who were awestruck, admiring the brand new vessel. Desireé sensed she was being watched and haughtily commented about this to Nicole, who reassured her, undoubtedly the gentleman was looking for someone he knew. After disembarking, Lance got a good look at Desireé to whom he flashed a broad friendly smile. She feigned offense at his gawking but nevertheless turned her head to look back as she and Nicole road off. This is how the unexpected strong feelings of desire arose between these two headstrong opposites who were destined to meet and eventually create a unique destiny together.
This young couple overcame conflicts, misunderstandings, betrayals, and deception which seemed to cross their paths from many unexpected sources. Even when they fulfilled the social norms and mores of their class and eventually married, and even when they were captivated by each other and totally in love, certain tensions arose from the past which haunted their relationship causing them to be less than honest with the other. The past created conflicts which nearly drove them apart but as with all well written fiction, this is the stuff which makes the novel so fascinating. The author creates pulsating excitement and anticipation within the reader who is glued to every page wondering how the conflicts which seem so insurmountable will be resolved. Lance suffered a tragic ending to his marriage and the loss of his unborn child which created personal heartache and pain that he was unwilling to share with Desireé, in the beginning of their marriage. Desireé was betrayed by her very loving grandfather who had a serious weakness of character which caused him to promise her in marriage to very man she despised. This man promised to settle all of her grandfather's debts if she would marry him. Fortunately for Desireé, Lance unexpectedly came to her rescue but they had miles to go before each understood the inner turmoil and suffering the other faced alone. It is absolutely wonderful how the author unwinds the past and lays open the hearts of these two young newly weds who eventually learn to trust their instincts and share the depths of their emotions with each other. This was a lovely, love story. I found out it very easy reading and held my interest so, that I read it in two days.
I found New Orleans to be very inviting, enticing and interesting.
This is such a great book, I would recommend it to any historical romance lover! The story draws you in from the start!! Loved the setting, the time period...loved everything about it. I am now hoping for a sequel!!
